Cooperatives Build a Better Future for All: Perspectives from Asia and Pacific

On July 6, cooperatives and their supporters around the world will celebrate the International Day of Cooperatives (IDC) with the theme “Cooperatives Build a Better Future for All.” The IDC presents an opportunity for cooperatives to showcase their commitment to inclusive and sustainable growth, environmental stewardship, and climate action. This year’s theme also aligns well with the objectives of the upcoming UN Summit of the Future, themed “Multilateral Solutions for a Better Tomorrow.”

This year cooperatives will celebrate the 102nd IDC and 30th UN International Cooperative Day. Since 1923, the IDC has been celebrated by cooperatives every year, in every country on the same date to attract the attention and interest of the whole world and communicate the message of, ‘each for all, and all for each.’

Cooperatives in  Sustainable development

The 2023 UN Secretary-General Report on Cooperatives in Social Development highlighted the significant role cooperatives play in promoting economic and social development, including for marginalized groups. Cooperatives have consistently demonstrated resilience during social and economic crises. The United Nations recognizes the cooperative movement as a key partner in accelerating sustainable development and calls on its member states to support and strengthen cooperatives’ entrepreneurial ecosystems. This support will enhance their capacity to generate social, economic, and environmental impact.

Cooperatives indentity and SDGs

The Statement on the Cooperative Identity (SCI) with its values and principles establishes a robust framework for achieving sustainable development goals (SDGs). A number of SDGs and their indicators are well aligned with the Cooperative Identity – SDG1: Reducing Poverty, is in line with the endeavor to meet members’ social and economic needs; SDG8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, is supported by a democratic and member-based approach, coupled with concern for community; SDG12: Responsible Production and Consumption, is promoted by the principle of concern for community and the value of equity; and SDG17: Partnerships, is upheld by the principle of cooperation among cooperatives. How cooperatives in the Asia-Pacific region contribute to the implementation of SDGs is well documented in COOP Dialogue 4 ‘Cooperatives’ Contribution to SDGs: Achievements and Way Forward’.

Cooperatives and Multilateralism

As organizations that prioritize collective decision-making and equitable distribution of resources, cooperatives embody the principles of cooperation and solidarity that are essential for effective multilateralism. They play a crucial role in addressing global challenges such as poverty, inequality, and climate change by fostering inclusive economic growth and sustainable development. Cooperatives by partnering with international organizations, governments, and other cooperatives, can share best practices, innovate, and leverage resources more effectively, ensuring that their contributions to economic and social development are both significant and far-reaching.

How can Cooperatives in Asia-Pacific contribute to building a better future for all?

  • Showcase Sustainable Initiatives – Document and share examples of successful cooperative projects that contribute to sustainable development and adopt environmentally sustainable practices.
  • Promote Inclusive Growth – Develop and implement programs specifically supporting the marginalized groups within cooperative frameworks. Expand access to financial services for marginalized communities, women groups, and informal workers through credit cooperatives.
  • Empower Youth and Women in Cooperatives – Create opportunities for young people to participate in and lead cooperative initiatives. Create ample space and opportunities for women in leadership roles and develop mentorship programs and leadership trainings to encourage women’s participation.
  • Enhance Education and Training – Implement education and training programs focused on cooperative values, governance, and sustainable practices.
  • Utilize Digital Platforms for Cooperative Development – Leverage digital tools to enhance the reach and efficiency of cooperative activities.
  • Strengthen Partnerships and Networks – Foster collaborations between cooperatives, governments, and international organizations to create a supportive ecosystem for cooperatives.
  • Advocate for Cooperative-Friendly Policies – Engage with policymakers to create an enabling environment for cooperatives to thrive.

Conclusion

The IDC is a day for cooperatives in the Asia-Pacific region to showcase their achievements, strengthen partnerships, and advocate for supportive policies. As we celebrate this day, let us recognize the vital role cooperatives play in our societies and commit to supporting their growth and development. Together, we can build a better future for all.
